I always liked light substrate, makes the tank look more natural and they love it. Now that you mentioned it, l160 does look like a durian...but he doesn't stink like one...lol. you are right about them getting more docile as they get bigger. The l282 use to be king but when the l160 started getting fatter it started getting super aggressive with the l282 and now they both just get along...lol.

I've had both of these guys for 2 yrs. They were 8" when I got it. I also got 3" of both plecos around the same time and now they are around 6". So I would say the growth rate is approx. 1.5-2" per yr. In my opinion its a good rate for plecos. Yeah their spikes are crazy sharp...especially on the bigger ones!

Very nice plecos you have there! I had a large l114 with my l600 at one point. They too went through a short aggressive period with one another. Then it was as if they called a truce lol. I just had to move my 12-13" l600 a couple weeks ago. I use really thick rubber gloves to handle him to avoid the spikes. Still not fun though lol.

I found 1 thing that works well. Those cheap suede/leather work gloves from home depot. Rinse them well and hang dry couple times before using them in the tanks. I'm ok handling the big L282s. It's the L185 that really hurts.....

Very nice looking Plecs, for moving mine I too use the thick leather cloth work gloves, works on my 24" RTC as well. I use gloves to catch all my plecos and Catfish those spikes hurt when they get you.
