I just picked up 2 tanks. A 90gal and a 110gal tall. I have a Nandopsis Haitiensis ( Black Nasty) ordered and also a Red Devil.

My questions are.. would you house these fish together in one of these tanks ? Would you house them seperately and add another kind of cichlid with them ? If so , what would you add to each tank ?

Any suggestions would be great.

Thank you

Depends, if you plan to upgrade. I am assuming they are juvies so they could coexist for awhile-keep an eye on what you feed your Haitian-I was told by Rapps to feed them every three days and give them a rich spirulina based diet.

If your not ever going to upgrade then I would keep them seperate. Both tanks you listed are decent sized. However, both fish become very territorial and aggressive and would need more space.
I was going to order a Haitian from Rapps and mentioned to him I have trouble keeping them alive. He mentioned, it would be a good idea to feed them (while small) once every two-three days.
Now, if you were to put them together in the 110 gallon you could make it work for about a year maybe longer and that could give you time to upgrade. If not once the aggression gets bad then remove one. But, have your 90 gallon on standby. I also recommend making a lot of caves and that way each fish can establish a territory.

Thank you. I don't mind keeping them in separate tanks.. but if I did this.. is there any other cichlid that could be housed with either of them ? Or am I best to just keep them both in their own tanks ( which I really don't mind doing) as single wet pets ?

Personally, I would keep them solo or add medium sized dithers-but those will probably get killed eventually. Here's the thing at first your tanks will look empty but after awhile when your fish grow your tanks will look sweet. Plus, by keeping them solo they will become glass bangers-which is always good topic for conversation with your friends and family. Had an Umbee for awhile solo in my 240 and he thought the whole living room was his-my friends and family loved him! Awesome to see a big cichlid attack your hand and every movement you make.

One more point you want your Haitian and RD to grow to their full potential and be happy-so your idea of them having their own tank is awesome!! In the end you will be happy and so will your fish. A lot of people feel that they need to add fish to their cichlid tank not realizing that eventually that cute little 3 inch cichlid will become a 14 inch monster-which your have the potential of becoming-good luck!

I doubt either species will work well with other fish once they are full grown, or at least not in 4' aquariums. I take it you got these from Spencer?

yeah, i suggest you keep them in seperate tanks if you're not going to upgrade. However, if you really did want to keep another cichlid with them, I would suggest maybe a Jack Dempsey, because JD's usually don't start a fight but they sure will hold their own. But again, single specimen tanks are going to be better.

Hi Darth, yes I will be getting them from Spencer. I haven't got them yet.. should be getting them next week. They will be small maybe 1.5 " - 2 ". Still.. I'm very excited. I absolutely love the Haitiensis. Have you had one of those ? I have already gotten a Carpintis Herichthys Escondido from him. Showing some beautiful colors already. I would love to just keep single specimen tanks. Friends think I'm crazy.. but I just tell them to give me and the fish a few years and then come back for a surprise.

Now its to decide which to keep in which tank.. or would it matter. The 110gal is taller thats the only difference. What do you guys think ?
