2 Oscars in a 40 gallon tank?

I dont understand how 75 gallons is a min

I've kept an oscar, silver arowada, and a chichid in a 55 gallon happily for years

Fish dont double in size overnite to spite the Magical Growth Rate BS tossed at ya. Just keep an eye on there water quality,and when they get too big buy a bigger Aquarium. You will have atleast a year, Or More, to decide..I have tiny Oscars in a large tank i was told i need and am waiting for this monster to appear in a few months..Straight up BS by Ego Maniacs its why people stop coming to MFK
 
The 40 will be good for about 6 months then you will have to upgrade to a 75 gallon.
 
Is it a 40 breeder or 40 long? 40 long might buy you more time in the agression dept. but you will need a bigger tank down the road.
 
I had 2 oscars in a 75 gallon for a few years and it looked cramped simply with the two in there. They were a good 14-16 inches, but it still looked small. If you can, I'd go for as big of a tank you can afford. The 40g Breeder is not as long as a 75 gallon, thus also does not help with territories and whatnot that may be set in a 40g Breeder. In the 75g, each oscar has a chance to take around 2 feet. Remember, bigger is always better. And to that guy with the aro, oscar, and another fish in a 75g, I bet that they didn't get to full-grown size because they weren't given the room they needed.
 
It's a roll of the dice as to whether ANY 2 Oscars will get along as adults no matter how big (in your case 'small') the tank is. That said-it's not good fishkeeping to put even one 12-15" fish in a 40 gal tank, much less 2. 60-75 g worth of water per Oscar, minimum. Or don't get an Oscar. If you want a fish that'll be able to live in a 40 g for life then start researching fish that max out at 5-6".
