6" in 6-7 months is not fast. i got mine to 8 inches in 3 months. power feeding silversides lol. since you cant get a bigger tank, get a senegal. good for beginners and very active, even in the day. the thing is, when you get 1 bichir, you will keep buying more hehe.

+1 that growth is actually really really slow, i got mine at about 2" in october and they're 6"+ now, and they've slowed down a good bit, diet of bloodworms (staple) and beefheart (occasional), only reason they've slowed is cuz i stopped powerfeeding
