hey guys, last year i attempted buying a discus at my lfs. So i went to big Als and picked a 2" pigeon blood discus with a hole bunch of black dots thru out its body. So when i bring it home and put it in my aquarium everything seems fine until i realise that it doesnt eat! So with me attempting to feed it for about 3 weeks it finally dies. Now, a few weeks ago i attempt to go at the discus again because i figured that i bought one with worms or wtv... So i go to big als and pick up one that almost looks IDENTICAL to the one i bought last year. So i put it in and wtv. The next day i buy a cobalt blue one which is slightly larger (3") and see how they do. to my enjoyment they both eat and are doing well. A couple weeks later the pigeon blood decides to stop eating for some reason and dies a few weeks later. But my blue cobalt one is still doing fine, infact hes thriving :O
So what im wondering is has anyone here experienced this problem with the lil pigeon bloods?

What are you feeding them?

How did you acclimate them to your tank?

Discus can be sensitive to large changes, especially when they're young.

On that note, what is your cleaning schedule?

Young discus are hard to keep. Juvies need constant feedings and water changes or they will get stunted or sick. For starters, I would get no less then 4 discus. They dont do well alone or in tiny groups (breeding pairs are different)

Go visit simplydiscus.com Lots of discus owners and breeders on that site. They have a lot of stickies in the beginner section that are very useful.

Temp. 82
pH 6.0-6.5
Nitrates-ites 0-.10
Ammonia 0-.10

Follow these parameters and you should be fine. Don't get discouraged, many discus come from our LFS' already beaten up. If your serious, you may want to try having them shipped as they are always the highest quality and cared for. Good luck!

With a new discus don't be afraid to up the temp to 90 for a month. (Just make sure you have enough airation.) And a little salt can help too (non iodized salt at a rate of one tablespoon per 20 gallons). After a month don't keep any salt in the water, and you can lower the temp slowly.

thanks guys, i think that its just the younger pigeon blood ones with black dots.... the other one seems to be doing fine :D

Lol, your first mistake there, to be honest, I would never by a high quality fish like a discus from Big Al's. I bought some sort a cichlid (atleast 10 inch) looking fine. No damaged fins. Put him in a 55g quaritine. Luckily i did that died within 2 days.

Go on google, and type in Jack Wattley Discus. He has a website and hes a very experinced discus owner and he breeds them! Hope this helped!

I have had some trouble with pigeon blood discus. I have had to get pigeon turquoise discus imported from Malaysia. They are thriving and are growing to be very healthy Discus.

When you see a pigeon blood, and it has black dots. Its a result from inbreeding for generations and it weakens their immune system. Stay away from pigeon bloods unless you can get them from a good quality source. Good luck with your discus.
