48-Pound Trout: World Record or Genetic Cheat? [link]

In an age of biotechnological juicing, not even the easygoing pastime of fishing is free from controversies over artificial enhancement.

On September 5, Saskatchewan fisherman Sean Konrad caught a 48-pound, world- record rainbow trout. The fish came from Lake Diefenbaker, where trout genetically engineered to grow extra-big escaped from a fish farm nine years ago.

The previous world record was held by Sean's twin brother Adam, who pulled a 43-pound, 10-ounce rainbow trout from Lake Diefenbaker in 2007. That catch sparked online debate over the legitimacy of Lake Diefenbaker's farm-born, genetically-engineered rainbows. Technically known as triploids, they're designed with three sets of chromosomes, making them sterile and channeling energies normally spent reproducing towards growth.

In 2007, on a message board of the International Game Fish Association, the angling world's record- and ethics-keeping body, some fishermen argued that triploids were unnatural, as divorced from the sport's history as Barry Bonds' home runs were from Hank Aaron's.

The IGFA refused to make a distinction between natural and GM fish. Neither would they distinguish between species caught in their traditional waters and those introduced into new, growth-friendly environments, such as largemouth bass whose extra-large ancestors were imported from Florida to California in the 1960s.

But to purists, there was a difference between transplantation and outright manufacture.

The Konrad brothers' response on the message board was curt: "Stop crying and start fishing."

Now they've caught another record-breaking trout. Or have they?

Lol, why are you so highstrung about your state being the best place in the world, I got news for you, IT'S NOT. All you ever friggin do is say cocky things about your state and you think it's the best lil fishing hole even though your bass and salmon are small lol.

There is many great fishing holes scatted across this planet. Cali is one of them, but I also dont see pics of you holding 10+ pound largies and smallies. Not that I have caught any but if I was looking to catch one that big it would be on my list as a top spot. Our salmon are not natural and thus dont get as big as wild fish. But at least we dont have a ban out on them because the population is so low and doing so poorly, not that MIs are doing much better but were not worried about them when we have such a good population of coho and a great skamania fisherie. What is your biggest salmon that youve caught I caught two yesterday that could have went 15-20 pounds ea.

30 lb king salmon and yes I have caught a 10 pound bass. I posted the picture in cichlid fiend's thread. And there isn't a ban this season, you can take 3 per person per day. Hell, the salmon are already up here in the river in friggin drones.

I thought the ocean ban was still in effect, maybe iam not up date. but the ones that are running will die anyway so I dont se why it would be closed inshore. Thats a nice king but no wear near giant compared to how big they can get in there native range. 30 pounder would be a hog for MI now days.

I'm not jealous of Michigan in any way. I actually think Michigan sucks. All people ever do from their is brag how they are better than others and brag about their non native fish that are dwarfs compared to where they come from.
