I put hydrosponge foam filters on the intakes of my XP3's to act as a prefilter. It keeps all the debris out of the intake tube and doesn't clog very fast. I keep ceramic rings in my filter as well. I use stacked hydrosponge filters with a maxijet powerhead for mechanical filtration. You wouldn't believe how much crud these foam filters can take out of your tank!

I cleaned out the xp3's today since I realized I couldn't remember the last time I had, and I gained some extra flow from that lol

You know the white floss pad will reduce the flow a lot when it's dirty. Just get rid of that one, in case you still have one in your fillter. The black sponges are good enough to keep your water clean
