20 gallon high or long?

hey guys, i am looking into a new tank, and trying to decide if I want a 20 gallon high or long. I am taking a breather on thinking about the jack dempsey 90 gallon until the local stores get some in stock (hopefully big males? but may have to grow em out). So my thought was to have a little semi community tank 20 gallon. I was thinking maybe a few schooling fish (6 neon tetra or any suggestions) with 2-3 blue rams? these are just ideas as of now.
What suggestions for a 20 high or long? and any suggestions on some fish? Maybe something that will breed? I'm looking for stuff I may be able to get at my local petco/petsmart/all pets club. Figured I'd try to get some ideas instead of jumping in head first.

I would go with a 20 long, aswell. If you want something that will breed, I would say Convicts are easiest. Just be prepared for lots and lots of fry every month. I wouldn't keep any other fish with any breeding pair, though. Otherwise, if you don't mind not doing a non-breeding pair, you could get 1 female Convict, and a school of Buenos Aires Tetras, or Black Skirt Tetras.

Or if you want a colorful community tank, I would suggest 2 Dwarf Gourami's, Platies, and Rasbora. Those all come in various colors.

How come so many corys? I thought they are just for clean up? I never had any before. How readily available are blue rams at petco/petsmart/all pets club? I have never actively looked for them yet so just curious if they usually sell em. Panda corys I dont see often, more the ugly albinos or the better looking green emeralds. Wouldnt corys eat any eggs that may be laid? Sounds like an awesome looking tank, im leaning toward that. Thank you.
 
Corys are social and need to be kept in groups. I suggest 5-6 minimum, but they'd be much happier in 12+.

BTW, I'd go 20 long 100%.
 
Hello; I like a 20 long and have had a few set up over the years. One advantage, for me, of a 20 long is that the footprint of the tank is the same as a 29 gallon tank. I was able to reuse the stand from the 20 long when I wanted a taller tank as my plants were growing too tall for the 20 long. The plants looked much better in the taller 29.
