20 gallon high or long?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would go with the 20L between those two tank choices.

But with the Petco $1 per gallon sale going right now I would rater have a 29G. In fact I just bought one as a hospital tank.

hey guys, i am looking into a new tank, and trying to decide if I want a 20 gallon high or long. I am taking a breather on thinking about the jack dempsey 90 gallon until the local stores get some in stock (hopefully big males? but may have to grow em out). So my thought was to have a little semi community tank 20 gallon. I was thinking maybe a few schooling fish (6 neon tetra or any suggestions) with 2-3 blue rams? these are just ideas as of now.
What suggestions for a 20 high or long? and any suggestions on some fish? Maybe something that will breed? I'm looking for stuff I may be able to get at my local petco/petsmart/all pets club. Figured I'd try to get some ideas instead of jumping in head first.
Thanks for your time guys, looking forward to some ideas and suggestions.

High or Long???????Long wins over high anyday.........High tanks should only be used either for Archer fish or slatwater............

I agree with the Long > High in general, but there are SOME freshwater species that are MUCH better off in taller tanks. Too broad a generalization makes your statement simply FALSE.

Full Saltwater flounder have precious little use for the additional hight of the 20H over the 20L. (Just one of MANY examples that shoot holes through your law of footprint!).

Again, you are right, in the vast majority of the cases, but not in EVERY non-marine & Archerfish brackish all inclusive!

sounds good, will they do ok with gravel? i read that they prefer sand...

cories do ok with gravel, though they do prefer sand. ceramic covered quarts grains are perfect, and usually cheaper than a lot of substrates, if you can find it. if you do go sand you want SMOOTH sand so they don't wear off their whiskers :) or barbels if you prefer.
just remember, you do need to feed them, they have no more interest in eating fish poop than you do.

unless you have tall fish like angelfish a 20 long will provide better space requirements than a tall tank, this is especially important if you decide to do any cichlids as it will give lesser specimens more area to hide from the dominant cichlid.

How come so many corys? I thought they are just for clean up? I never had any before. How readily available are blue rams at petco/petsmart/all pets club? I have never actively looked for them yet so just curious if they usually sell em. Panda corys I dont see often, more the ugly albinos or the better looking green emeralds. Wouldnt corys eat any eggs that may be laid? Sounds like an awesome looking tank, im leaning toward that. Thank you.

Most of those fish are pretty common and can be ordered off the internet. The banjo cat would probably have to be ordered off the internet. Panda corys are sold at petcos sometimes. If you want eggs you will need a breeder tank/fry tank. Blue rams are sort of common and can be ordered off the internet. One really good place on the internet to by fish is http://www.liveaquaria.com and all of the fish except for the banjo cat can be bought off of this site.

I've had both and I ended up selling the 20g High...I like the 20g Long better;)
