I have a 20 gallon long sitting around and I think I want to set it up with a native fish from where I live in South Ga. Is it too small for a redfin pike or a warmouth? Any ideas on what I could keep in it?

pretty much too small for anything native ... both of those fish for sure. maybe someone has some ideas for a smaller native ??

There are tons of native fishes that would fit a 20g long.

any of the Enneacanthus species, Elassoma species, smaller Lepomis species like orangespotted and bantam sunfish, mud sunfish

madtoms, darters, sculpins, mudminnows, 100+ species of minnows, topminnows, killies

various oddities like sticklebacks, silversides, pirate perch

Yup, pretty much what he said. It just depends what you're into. A 20 long is definately too small for pike or warmouth, but there are a ton of other stuff to choose from. I think madtoms, darters and sculpins are some of the coolest, but there are a lot of minnow species to choose from and banded sunfish are really neat if you can find them.

Just make sure you don't take home any protected or endagered species, see what's legal in your area and make sure you identify what you catch before you take it. Some fish like banded sunfish are easy to identify whereas darters can all look pretty much the same between species.

How is that helpful to the original poster? What species? Bluegill are sunfish and can get 16 in long...
Warmouth are sunfish too and it's already been stated they get too big.

I just scooped some nice mollys, etc. from a small local spring here in N Florida.

Go to your local lake/pond/river/whatever. Do some chumming. Breadcrumbs, etc. Scoop with net, and see what you got. I ended up wtih a few species... need to post a pic for an ID on one, but the others are the native molly and gambusia. Think the one I need ID on is a dace of some sort.

hmmm...i would listen to drewish he really knows his stuff when it comes to natives.

Pirate perch, warmouth, or possibly even a little madtom catfish. They say warmouth get to big but I think you would be alright man.
