20 gallon long

Plecos for sure, BNs , clown, common, Just kidding on the common LOL! Neon tetras or cardinals look good in a 20 I have 36 of them in a 20 tall along with clown pleco, 2 Bristlenose and 2 high fin pleco, just in there till they get bigger than 2".

I've got some dalmation mollies (not a favorite but they were a gift) in my 20g long with a dwarf guarami, two sunset male guppies, and a male albino pleco. they all pop with the black sand I have in the tank. If I were to do it again, i'd definitely go with rams.

i would definitely recommend a harem of N. multifasciatus (shelldweller from Tanganyika) from personal experience. They're probably the most fascinating fish I've ever kept. But they're hard to come by. Otherwise, a pair N. Brichardi (cichlid from Tanganyika) which are beautiful fish and great parents and a fish I've always desired to keep.
If you're looking to go another route away from Africa, my third suggestion would be to set up a river tank with fast flow and a pair of American gobies.
