20 gallon planted

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would clean it off your plants before it kills them... Too much of a build up and your HC may not be able to grow properly...

I am trying it's very hard since the HC is not rooted fully. Any tips?

^ Well, for me personally, when i have to "clean" my substrate in a planted tank, i get a long air hose and use it like a miniature syphon to slowly vacuum out all the crap that sits on top of the substrate or on top of the plants... seems to the be to most effective method to get rid of small bit of stuff and not suck up the tanks substrate at the same time...

Another method i use is to either repeatedly (but gently) press down on top of the plants or produce a sweeping motion with my hand above the plants to try and get the looser bits of gunk to float up into the water and then syphon it out with a hose...

Both methods are definitely time consuming, but pays off in the end...

-EDIT-

BTW, are you constantly cleaning algae off the glass panels in-between your regular water changes? i.e. you do water changes every Saturday, but Sunday to Friday you keep scrubbing algae?

The reason i ask is because i noticed when i was constantly cleaning algae off my glass without performing a water change, i also started to see a lot more detritus / brown algae build up as well..

thanks ill try that thanks for the detailed response. I kinda scrub the algea at random and water change at random I will have to get a system going

Yeah, trying to keep water changes etc to a sort of schedule helps, and personally would recommend water changes right after algae scrubbing to remove the free floating algae from the tank so it does not settle and cause more algae ;)

just removed all the plants and large rocks did a 50 percent water change. scrubbed all the algea of the rocks and plants. now for the long process of replanting

well I found out the problem I had too much sunlight hitting the tank. I covered the windows a few days ago now the algea is starting to die off

Wonder if i am having a similar issue. I have some fuzzy green algae bloom too and the tank sits in fairly direct sun light. I finally put my light on a timer for 12 hours a day and shut the blinds on the window. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the tip! Hope it keeps working for ya.

^ 12 hours is a lot of light... Which is also likely the cause of your algae problem
