I'm trying my hand at a DIY foam background in a 20 high. Here is is with the foam done. I'm in the process of covering it in Drylok now.

It will be open topped and the only thing I'm pretty sure I will be including are some small black mangroves. If it ends up staying freshwater (still considering brackish), then I will also include a variety of other plants as well.

I might just do a single 3-5" fish, a community of small fish and inverts. I'm pretty open to ideas. I'd like it to be some sort of biotope and I have a few ideas, but I'm open to hearing others opinions as well. If you answer the poll, post your specific stocking ideas

looking forward to finished pics

Thanks guys. I hope to be done painting it this week

id say neon school, but thats kinda common.. its a gr8 look. what about dwarf puffers.

tank looks gr8. im guna try this later on hahha

Either a dwarf puffer group or a single slightly larger puffer are both options I'm considering. I'm also thinking about pencilfish or small tetras

I am new to MFK and have a couple of extra 20H laying around. You have me interested in trying my hand at a build also, the graphic designer in me. What kind of foam did you use and where do you pick up supplies to do something like this. What you have so far looks awesome and I am looking forward to seeing your next pics. As far as stocking I love exotic plecos and a couple cichlids. Thanks!

I used Great Stuff spray foam. It worked well for the vines. For the large stump portion, it ended up rather bubbled and full of holes. Next time around, I will be carving up layered foam insulation sheets for the larger elements of the background instead. I am painting it with Drylok concrete sealer which I'm staining with a couple colors of concrete dye. This project is basically a trial run of making my own background to learn what I'm doing. I'm planning to do a larger version in a tank of several hundred gallons in the future

A little update. Started painted with the tinted Drylok today. A nice muddy color for the back and top edge. I also went at the top of the front glass with a razor blade to get rid of most of the hard water stains and silicone.

I'm leaning more and more toward a brackish tank after seeing some orange chromides at a store yesterday, but I'm still open to suggestions
