What does characin mean?

:topic:

Like cichlid means a fish of the family Cichlidae, characin means a fish of the family Characidae, none have whiskers, many have adipose fins, all have teeth and scales, all lay eggs, they include all the piranha and tetras.

is it a fish??
If you were closer I'd whack you with a carp, lol.

Can you eat it?!? :D Meaning do people actually eat it for food???

(10) yes and no (it is sometimes eaten by locals but there is no major fishery for it) this is true for almost every freshwater fish including guppies. It is eaten and caught sometimes by sport fishermen but that is incidental to fishing for other species.

Is it legal here in the states?

(11) yes, maybe restricted in some states but I have never seen any listings that named it forbidden.

Here is what you Know so far:
it is a south american fish,
it is not a piranha or a banana,

1) it is smaller than 2' long when full grown,
2) it can be kept in a tank of 100g or less,
3) it IS a carnivore,
4) it has a forked tail
5) it is NOT a cichlid
6) it is NOT a catfish
7) it IS a characin
8) it is not a bottom feeder
9) it usually needs to be special ordered to buy and it is legal to do so
10) it is not usually a food fish though it can be eaten
11) it is legal to own or buy in most if not all states in USA

9 questions to go. Here is a hint, it is NOT a HUJETA.
