I was reading the paper today and noticed that over 20 rays died over a period of one night in the same tank in the Calgary Aquarium. Does any one no anything about this. The article said they had tested all the water and it was perfect as well as the system was running like normal. I'm guessing some kind of internal parasite, could this be related to the sudden death syndrome? I'll try and find the article :)

i also wonder, may of those places which allows people to hand feed rays have hand sanitizer which might be a possible connection.

 - Anybody ever see a ray death with "black blotches"?

As nine surviving stingrays, some covered with black blotches – a telltale sign of stress

So sad....
The deaths are the latest blow to the zoo, which since 2004 has lost a baby Asian elephant that was rejected by its mother, four western lowland gorillas – including a newborn – because of various aliments, as well as a hippopotamus that died soon after being shipped in a crate from the Denver Zoo.

I seriously doubt that a zoo which incorporates an interactive display such as this ray tank, would place a hand sanitizer station, containing any harmful sanitizers, for use by people wanting to place their hands in the tank.

I think it is more likely that some unsavory individual either purposefully or unintentionally introduced some sort of toxin in the tank when they placed their hands in the water.

This is a very unfortunate tragedy.

that is one sad story for the rays and the zoo keepers too

never seen the black blotches.... that really sucks... wonder what happened??

Probably, but the alcohol should dissipate before they ever get their hands in the water. Not only that, but the amount of sanitizer it would take to kill the fish in the tank, given it's volume, would be enormous. Someone would have to throw a bucket in to kill those fish.
