20" Tinfoil Barb?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Check out some of these Thailand Fishing resort sites. You'll see Hypsibarbus Wetmorei the yellow fin tinfoil barb hit 15"-20" easy //

This one here spans her beyond shoulder to shoulder probably just at 20"

In the 6th pic that barb is over 20"

http://huahinfishing.com/the-fish/
these here i guess are pretty average

golden belly tinfoil looks bigger than schwandenfeld barb in every one + most places that keep giant siamese carp will have both barbs there most likely also huge.

20" for tank raised barbs will be a challenge but they're out there. would be sick to keep the puntioplites proctozysron.

i am quite sure none of the barbs you mentioned are over 20".. the pic was taken with hand outstretch to put the fish closer to the camera thus making it looks bigger...

Great. I'm wrong. Cool bro. I guess there aren't any barbs in Thailand Fishing resorts other than the 3 i posted that don't get that big. I'll keep looking though & let u know if something comes up... so so sorry if i'm off by a couple inches....??????nlols

i am just stating that fisherman usually extend their arms out with the fish nearer to camera to make the fish look bigger than it actually is... there may be a possibility of the size you mentioned but i just don't see it in those pictures

Look under the Asia Redtail Catfish thread, i posted a pic of recent caught RTC at castaway. That is about 2ft or slightly bigger.

I am going thailand again this week but doubt i will have time for fishing if i do and if i catch 1, you be the first to know... lol

Ratchaburi would be next on my list as there are a few ponds there with monster fish

ponds i been to in thailand and below is what i remember i caught

bungsamaran fishing park - mekong
pilot 111 - snakehead, chao phraya, barramundi, mekong and few others
castaway - gar, rtc and siamese barb. Could not get arapaima to bite.
wilf's fishing retreat - rohu, rtc

IRL I've seen them up to 14" so I don't doubt in the wild or at least ponds that are maintained, it's possible that they could hit or tap at 16" possibly ++ w/maybe a bigger than ave but those pics aren't too too misleading vs no camera trickery. Sure now that u say the camera angle i totally agree but still they're pretty nice size compared to average we usually see at 12" or so. A second look at those pics, yeah the 1st one is shady but the 2nd one has to be a close 17"? Really tho if i find more i'll share. Good call + I've never been fishing out there but u know there are some huge pondmates for those fish u listed....barbs i'd say prolly not monster monster like these but def will be good catches here & there.

Thank you for the info, all.

I never understood why fisherman do not include a tape measure in their pictures. One picture is you holding the fish. Next, put it down with a ruler next to it and photograph.

The biggest bala I came across was allegedly 19" and for sale in the Marketplace, IIRC in California.

Our balas and tinfoils are 5-10 years old and are probably under 1.5'.

there could be several reasons.. eg: the ground may be too hot for the fish, usually water will be splashed on the ground or being responsible and trying to take a quick pic and send the fish back

but the most logical would be, no one wants to measure a small fish... lol

for ponds, if it is a big fish and has a possibility of being a record in the pond or world, they usually will measure and weigh... so they can post on facebook or website to attract more anglers to patronise them

bungsamran is more or less monster monster with over 20 ex or current world records iirc

but they have different pricing for locals and foreigners... 400 baht vs 4000 baht... foreigners pay 10 times more!!!

Are lemon barbs the same as tinfoil barbs with just different colored fins? If so, wouldn't tinfoil barbs with red fins potentially have the same growth potential?

Super HUGE GIANT Lemon Barbs:
Two different species or should I say three... Lemon barbs are often sold as tinfoil barbs because they're hard to differentiate when small from the larger species of tinfoil barb. There's two other species sold as tinfoil barbs. You have the ones that get just the red fins, then the one that get red fins with black strips on the outer edge. Plenty threads on this topic. Lemon barbs grow the largest. The tinfoil barbs with just red fins are the second largest. It's been years since I've read up on it so I won't state exact sizes. Can't even remember exact scientific names. But I believe the lemon barbs get around 18", the larger species of tinfoil get around 15" max and the smallest stays a foot or under. I have read of bala sharks hitting 2', I believe there was a member here or maybe another forum many years ago who claimed to have two 2' bala sharks alone in a 500g tank. Can't remember if he posted pictures, but if he did they weren't good nor conclusively believable. If you asked me I'd say 1' on bala sharks. Don't think I'd be to surprised if you showed me one slightly over a foot, I'd just assume it's an old healthy one.
