There's a guy buying a tank off me, who has a 540gal (7x3.5x3.5) tank that's over 20 years old. He's re-sealed it I guess and it holds water. He wants 1000 bux for it, and it's all glass except for an expoxied steel bottom.

I'm on the fence a bit. It'll cost me quite a bit to transport it from where he is to my house (probably around $200 by the time it's all over and done.). He's offered me a discount because of this, and we can work a trade in with the tank he wants off me. So. If I get him to knock 350-400 off the purchase price between shipping and my 125, I'll be into this monster for around a grand. It's ugly right now, but it could be spiffed up quite a bit if I built a cabinet around the steel stand. So much outlay and work to make it useable though. What do you all think?

I don't NEED the tank (I will, eventually, as my monsters grow). I can't get the tank into my house, I'd have to either set it up in my garage, or just sit on it until I move. I'd rather not have it in my garage, cuz I do a lot of fab work out there, and use a lot of nasty chemicals. I could try to fix it up and sell it, but something like this is not really a fast mover. I could also tear it down, sell the stand for scrap metal, and keep the 2 3x7' panes for a real monster tank down the road. I guess whether that's worth it or not depends heavily on how scratched up they are.

Seems like you have made up your mind that you dont want it. You said a heck of a lot more negatives about this tank then positives. One thing my finance teacher taught me was, make a list of pro's and con's and if there is one con you can't live with then absolutely do not do it.

If you can't house the tank then I say don't get it. I had trouble getting my 585 in the house so I used to garage(it's under the house) so it's fine. but it would NEVER fit into a regular door. So if you can't fit it in the doors and can't fill it in the garage then I would say don't get it. You know you can't house it outside for fear of someone breaking it. So Unless you want to tear it down till you have time/space for it then I would say don't get it.

But on the other hand It's a hard deal to pass up. lol

Well here's the thing, I DO want it, and I've been trolling for a deal like this for a long time. The negatives all kind of suck - it will be a ton of work to even just get the tank here, but having said that, I could always spiff it up and try to sell it. It may not move fast, but I can probably turn it over for a lot more than $1k.

I don't mind having to sit it in my shop empty for a while. I just don't think I want to set it up out there. I could get it in through our back sliding door, but it would have to then stay in that room, cuz it won't go down any hallways into any other rooms.

Mind you when I DO go to build a monster tank, it will be very difficult to find 3x7 windows for anywhere near $1000, so having this beast kicking around wouldn't be such a bad thing.

I dunno. I keep swinging this way and that.

:iagree:

yeah one the tank is over twenty years old and he wants a grand just keep ur 125 and let some one else buy the tank i dont think its worth ur time in my opinion

We'll see. I just emailed the guy. It'll cost me nearly 300 bucks just to move the stupid thing. (rent trailer, pay for gas, pay for ferry there and back, etc.) I measured it up and it would fit perfectly in my garage, so storing it wouldn't be a problem.

I just keep thinking if that glass doesn't have any scratches on it, and it's 3/4" glass, think of the bloody hulk I could build using it. It'd cost me near a grand for similar viewing area in acrylic, only it would be 3 windows instead of 2. (3x32"x48" rather than 2x 36"x84")

Can't get it in the house? Come on! They do make wider doors you know! That's what hardware stores and sawzalls are for!

lol yeah I've been wandering around the house a bit today wondering which walls I could massage to make it fit :p unfortunately it's a rental, and this SOB is gonna be enough work as it is. I think I'd rather just stick it in the shop and run some cold water natives or even just fill it up with goldfish for now. I am going to have to move out of this house sooner or later. I just set up a new bed for our 7 year old today and it nearly touches the walls in his 'bedroom' that's actually an office :p

SOUNDS LIKE YOU NEED A NEW PROJECT but dont dive into this 1... dont settle for this theres 2 many negatives ive been forced to put tanks where i didnt want them and it never really works out to be pleasing.... id pick up a magazine look at a new fish/set up and think of a new project or.... start designing your own tank
