20 y/o 540gal tank... help me decide

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would only get a tank that large with the understanding that if it leaks within 3 months of being setup you get a refund on the tank equal to what repairs cost...if you don't have room to set it up it's just going to be a huge eye sore - and being that old and large I would not want to let it sit around empty for long.

I would to just be patient and let another better deal come your way.

Well, it would cost me almost as much to return it as the tank is worth, plus $1000 for a 500+ gallon tank is a steal for a reason - there's a risk there for sure. I would likely tear down the whole tank, sandblast the stand, recoat, and rebuild the whole thing so I was 100% sure it was good as new before I ever moved it into my home. This would be a TON of work, but it wouldn't cost me anything but time.

I'm kind of making a half assed attempt to start a small business building and refurbishing tanks, so this would be a nice thing to have on the go, or even just sitting in my shop to attract some interest.

Sound advice I guess. Always hard to pass up an opportunity that's knocking on the door tho! I think what I'll wind up doing is sitting on this 125 I have for a little while. Try to sell the freaking car that's sitting next to my house, tie up the worst of the projects I have on the go, and after all that if the guy still has the damn tank, he'll probly be willing to sell it for less than a grand, and I'll just go get it.

If it was down the street and the guy wanted a grand, Id already have it... it's just the massive hassle moving it.

Canucksfan1 has this same tank. He had to reseal. You may want to pm him

LOL. He's the guy with the tank. I didn't realise he was a member here!

yeah dang. Just read this thread here

That's the tank. So it definitely needs all the seams redone, and probably the bottom redone as well. Basically be buying just the glass. (which actually still isn't that bad of a deal, if the glass is good, but I'll still pass for now.) If he still has it in a month or so when I'm finished with some other crap I've got on the go, I'll reconsider it.

did you say it has a metal bottom. wow I dont know, I think I would have to let it pass, besides what 20 year old tank wouldnt have scraped up.

I wouldn't buy it. Wait for a another deal to come around.

Definitely don't buy it and expect to "spiff it up" and resell for a profit. You will end up spending a lot of time, and I doubt you it will be worthwhile. Financially, you'd be better off spending that time working for minimum wage somewhere.

LOL man if you look at any of the projects I do, this statement applies. You can't count your hobbies as costing you $10/hr you could be making somewhere else. If I spent as much time working as I did building cars, fishtanks, and other crap, I'd have more money than I knew what to do with. I enjoy the work, so I count my time at $0/hr unless I'm building a tank for someone else.

That said I'm not going to get it unless he still has it when I get a bunch of my other crap out of the way.

No matter what form a monster tank comes in, it's going to be an ass-load of work, and a serious pain to move, so if I can get one for $1k plus a couple weeks of work in my shop instead of $2500 from glasscages plus the headache getting it here... it sounds like an OK deal to me.... I just don't have room, money, or time right now ;)
