I stopped in a "new" LFS that i've never been to yesterday and noticed they had a lot of cool unusual fish. They had about 5 small RTC's and each one looked a little "strange".They were NOT for sale. I asked the lady what was up with that and she said here son worked at a local fish importer/distributor and that RTC's are being bred in china now and out of a shippment of 2000 RTC's only 500 were sellable, all the rest were mutants. The ones she had were the non sellable mutants. Fins that dont match, jaws that look crooked, skinny heads  all like an experiment gone bad. and the wholesaler payed $700 for 2000 fish. She also went on to say the "new" captive bred mutants dont grow very fast or big at all. She has had the little guys for about 6 months and they were only about 3" :WHOA: Even mine grow faster than that :D

Ive been seeing a lot of cheap small RTC's around lately and many dont look good, now I know why. I just thought i'd pass this info along, true or not I dont know, but it kinda makes sense.

I don't think they are mutants, they just have been starved too long in the sellers tank..

No they are definately a little "odd" Very plump indeed, just not very proportioned, like a birth defect. I wont be back there for a week or two but i'll try and grab somer pics.

Which LFS was it? I live in Old Bridge myself. I'm always looking for a new oddball place to check out.

There is a LFS here in my home town that adopts fish that have grown to large for their owners. They currently have a 12" RTC for $60. They have them quite often. I don't think most people realize just what they are buying when they get a red tail. I already have a 20", or I would pick it up.
