The breeders of these fish are just not culling out the deformities that would naturally be culled in the wild. I have a tsn now that has the most severe cranial curvature I have ever seen. He's about 13" right now. He also has no pelvic fins. Seems happy though. Eats like a champ. As for the size of those rtc, they definitely sounds stunted to me. I have noticed that most lfs when they get baby catfish ie rtc or tsn. They feed them blood worms which is fine when they are just 2 or 3" long, but after they get larger they really need more than just that. They eventually stunt out. It becomes very hard to get them to grow after they get to this state. They lose bone density, skin pigment, eyesight, hith may occur, ect. As for the location of breeding, I believe most are bred in giant pools that are plumbed right into the amazon. Kinda like the hatcheries they have here in montana except on a larger scale. Some of these are rented out for use, and the produced fish are all sold. Ever been to a trout hatchery? They cull out as many of the deformed fish as they can, but there is still a way higher number that make it back into the wild as adults or juveniles. I have caught many hatchery trout here with no fins, or large bulbous heads, and strange pigment.
