200g Wetsuit Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice build. Very knowledgable info. I want to build another tanks. I built one and used cheap 3/4 inch plywood and as I went on I figured that the whole design and layout was sketchy so I sold it to a guy without glass for a bearded dragon cage. It was around 400 gallons so that's going to be one happy dragon. Ne ways. Learned a lot from ur build and about wetsuit. Nice job!

Any particular kind of silicone you used?

I am using DAP Silicone, which is a Dow Corning product.

Thank you. I am sure that dragon is pretty happy with his new home:). Reptile enclosures are so much easier to design and build, no need to worry about water and pressure. Unless of course you are building an aquatic turtle, a crocodilian, or anaconda enclosure. If you are building an enclosure for venomous snakes than you have other things to pay attention to. I have built them all.;)
I think 1/4" ply is a bit thin but would probably be OK in a frame like I have done with this tank. You might need to space the 2x4 supports just a bit closer.

Thanks - the reason I ask is several folks have reported issues with trying to stick silicone to elastomer/polymer type coatings like wetsuit. Maybe the different formulation of wetsuit allows basic silicones like DAP to bond. If I use Zavlar in my build I think I'll likely have to try a few different sealants to find one that will stick.

I have found that silicone adheres very well to Wetsuit. It does not want to peel off at all and what happens if you try to tear it off, the silicone starts to tear and will peel away leaving a layer of silicone still attached to the Wetsuit. So basically, you can not separate the silicone from the Wetsuit without doing damage to one or the other. This test was done with 4 types of silicones and only one was able to peel off and I think it was because the tube was at least (not exactly sure how old) couple years old. In fact I have tried to use a new tube of the same silicone and found that it adhered just as good as all the other samples, so it seams it was due to the age of that particular tube.

So make sure you use new silicone.;)

Awesome! Any news yet on how/where to purchase this?

OK, the product is actually sold through Triton, I was under the impression that Neptune was the distributor but it is the marketing company. It is all owned by the same people. The Website is tritonwp.com You can go to the contacts page and send them an Email or call them. Make sure you let them know you are using it for an aquarium application, as they normally only sell this product to certified applicators.

Thanks for the link. I may try to order some of this stuff in a month or two for a future build, depending on how yours turns out.

I was reading through the info on 1-part Wetsuit, and came across this:

_______________________________________________________________
What is the minimum mil thickness of the dry membrane?
- Roofing: 60 mil dry - Waterproofing: 80 mil dry vertical. 100 mil dry horizontal - Air/Vapor barrier: 40 mil dry
_______________________________________________________________

Are you only going to use 60 mil dry, or did you apply it thicker than that?

So is this just tritons wetsuit glue?

I can understand why they only sell to professional applicators cause the stuff is toxic as all hell.
