Since you say you can upgrade to a 3ft tank, have you considered a Severum?

A sevrum would get WAY too big for a 3 ft tank! So would an Oscar or a Jack Dempsey! All of those fish get a foot long or more...they wouldn't even be able to turn around... :(

I said depending on the overall dimensions of the tank...I have seen some really great sized 3ft tanks. Such as the 3ft cube tank. But if he were to get a 50G tank which is a 3fter...its actually a better shape than a 55G(which is regarded as the min tank size for a single species of these fish) for largish cichlids because its 18" wide. Now your standard 3ft 30G tank isnt going to permantly cut it, no. I saw a tank at my LFS that I really wanted....it was 36"X24"X16"...which was an 85G. Sure not all 3ft tanks are going to work...but some would work perfectly.

I'm suprised nobody has mentione apistogramma yet. that'd make the 20 a little bit more lively. Also, I hear shell dwelling cichlids do great in smaller tanks.

Word. my closed mind was just thinking of a 30 gallon tank.:footinmou

Single fish? How about a wimples piranha, good price right now (see thread in the piranha forum. Breeding tank? maybe cockatoo Apistogammas, or a colony of african shell dwellers.

I live in Aus, Piranhas are illegal.

Okay so it looks the sale of my eels is finally going to go through, so I "should" have an empty 20g by Tuesday, I'm getting $35 for the trio, and will have about $40 to spend on stocking the new tank, if possible I'd rather order online from www.livefish.com.au, since they have a mildly better chance of selling healthy fish.

I'm not really into apistos, not my cup of tea, though Rams are alright, but then again if I get a breeding pair, then thats no fun LOL.

Any other suggestions?

How about some Dwarf Puffers or maybe a couple Green Spotted Puffers, they have lots of personality, don't get very big, and probably would get along just fine with the Pleco.

Convict, festivum, firemouth. Sounds like your into cichlids and just straight up mean fish. A pair of jewels or kribs would be cool too.

Chad

Dwarf puffers and gsps are also illegal, I never said anything bout a pleco? A CAE isn't a catfish...

What about African cichlids? They seem pretty aggressive, and their all such bright colours, my LFS sells Peacocks, but they always seem to be fairly drab...

I'd prefer a single large fish, somewhere round 6-8 inches long? Water changes aren't a problem, its only a 20, not hard to do a 50% change on.
