my convicts always have a brood of babies about every two weeks. I don't take out any of the babies and just leave them to the other fish. Even so, there is still one left that is probably going to grow up to adult size. they are very fertile, and the male is about 3 inches, with a visible hump on it's head, long flowing tail, and flowing fin. The female is a bit smaller at about 2 1/2 inches, with red orange spots on the belly, and smaller tail and rear fins. They also like to have a cave in their tank to have babies. But if you want to keep them by them selves, you definitely will have a big brood if you got a viable pair.
