sorry for your loss...never a sight u want to see.
we all learn, i had a 2.5" FH in with fish that should really have eaten him. a week later the whole tank was dead except the FH. all the other fish wer 10"+. he def has his own tank after that lol

looking at the wound it seems the gar was bitten as the lungfish was going up for air - i had an african lung that ate all my cichlids, silver aro, and bichirs. the cichlids and aro all had wounds around the belly.

I'd bet that the gar was trying to snatch a piece of food from the lung...and SNAP...the chunk out of its belly... Then the lung went to work on the rest.
Whenever I see someone post about how their African Lung is in a community and gets along with other tankmates...I just cringe. Only a matter of time.
Watch your fingers / hands in the tank as well.

i hadnt fed them in two days. The lungfish is only aggressive when hes hungry.. I woke up and this was going on.. he bit the stomache open some how then went from there.
