I’ve never kept any Frontosa nor seen any other cichlid do that? It’s a long thread so my apologies if it’s been mentioned but is there a crazy amount of flow? Maybe just taking a reprieve from the current?

Mine will also chill in caves and occasionally I will see 1 sitting on the bottom upright. Can’t say I’ve seen any laying on their side, but if they come out and are feeding normally I wouldn’t be too concerned mate 
I've always kept mine with low flow. I'm used to this behavior now when I see it. But they're quick to get up and join in at feeding time, so they're definitely not unwell in any way when they act that way.

I have two FX-6 and the outputs are tilted horizontal / upwards so it doesn’t seem like the flow is too high.
Most days they sort of hover in the lower third of the water column - and it doesn’t look like anyone is being blown around.
They do still like the caves for little hides though.

Getting bigger, but at the end of the day they’re still some pretty small fish.

My Mikula male took 4 years to get to 12”. But is that a true monster

not compared to the others on this site!For me, whose only kept much, much smaller fish before - a 12 inch Frontosa would be fantastic!
If you keep your water pristine w nitrates <5-10 on water change day you male/s should reach 12” pretty comfortably around the 3.5-4yr mark and then top out at 14-15” somewhere in the 7-10yr range
