People that don’t routinely clean there canisters will not routinely clean their sumps. The issue is the person not the equipment

My canisters are a whole lot easier to clean & maintenance than my sumps are because of the convenience of there location. Dedication, or lack there of, to good water quality is the main factor in aquatic hygiene.
Which part of SA are you asking about? The water parameters are different between Amazonian, East & West of the Andes
