220 gal. reef help needed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will have more info soon as to the RO topoff. I checked the wet dry last night and it is full of bioballs and other media. Should carbon be used in a reef set up?

Carbon or Purigen. I prefer the latter.

2-3 "of live sand instead of the coral
add 100 or so lbs more of live rock. go with less dense stuff like branch (aestetically pleasing)

use a large skimmer
if the system has a built in overflow go with the wet/dry but make it a refugium. If it has a hang on the back overflow, then ditch it and just use the sand/rock/skimmer method.

refugiums are easy to set up and maintain. 5-6" of sand and lots of calurepa. Light it on a reverse cycle as your lights to stabilize pH at night.

use carbon in the filter and add lots of flow to the tank. Try and get as much turnover as possible. Tunzemakes a great kit but expensive. Seio has a new controller for their powerheads and this would give you great bang for the buck as well as turbulent flow.

This is how my 800 gal will be set up when finished. but i will have a few extras since i am building my set up.

good luck. PM if you have more questions

I can see already I need a bigger skimmer, but what chemicals should I invest in for starters? Ther are only 2 corals in the tank right now. 1 large piece of what I am told is leather and somthing else I am not sure what to call it. There are about a dozen fish (clowns, coral beauties, damsels, ect...), sea cucumbers, eruchents(SP?), starfish, and lots of snails.

I wouldn't use any chemicals unless there was a reason to. The only time I run carbon even is if something new has been introduced or spawned etc. I would invest in a good salt water master test kit though as it will tell you what you need to suppliment. Never add anything that you aren't testing for!

With a leather combined with any other corals, I'd use carbon or Purigen. They aren't chemicals they remove chemicals, caused by warfare between corals.

OK I am starting to get the space ready for the tank. I just wanted a few suggestions as to some good books to read. Your opinions are valued. Thanks!!
