I run two Eheim 2262 on mine.
Maybe not cheap, but absolutely reliable.

I have a sump with backup drains, cemented PVC pipe, dual pumps, and 4 check valves on a 540. I have an Eheim 2262 on a 125.

I worry more about the 125 with the Eheim than I do about the 540 when I'm working outta town.

There is only one pump on the 2262--if it breaks, the tank is stagnant until I get home.
The hose connections are nowhere near as robust as the hard PVC pipe under my 540.
A leak in the canister could siphon most of 125 gallons of water out of the tank.

I think the 2262 is reliable. But, it's not as robust, not as well designed as the sump. Also, the 125 is a glass tank.

I think a well planned sump is more reliable in the long run. Having all the equipment not in the display is a big thing for me. I recently setup a 120 with a 55 gallon sump. The added water volume is a plus. All i see is the return plumbing and overflow. Also the sump can act as an isolation tank if needed. I based my sump setup on ragin_cajun ragin_cajun s 540 build. I am in the process of setting up a drip system. I added two overflows to the sump that drain outside. One is at the normal height i want the sump at the other is about 2 inches from the top of the tank which is just an emergency.

Just my .02
