Just bought a used 220 gallon came with a 150 gallon sump. This sump size looks like overkill x10!?! Thoughts please! Can I use a smaller tank for a custom sump? What size would be sufficient? (This set up Came with a MAG drive 2400 pump.)

just curious.. 150 gal sump.. whats the dimension of this sump? assuming your 220 is 72"x24"x30" high.. your sump fit into your 220 stand?? i would just find a used 75 gal and setup as a sump instead..more clearance between sump and tank..but if i were you i'll just use that as a sump giving that you don't have issue with support of this setup...

I run my 210 with a 45 gallon plastic tote and a mag 18. I'll probably switch over the a comparable rated dc pump at some point.

Usually you want the biggest sump you can handle space wise but I've had several smaller sumps work just fine. A smaller sump will give you less room for error (evaporation, water in your overflows from power loss, equipment, etc).

150 and a mag 24 sounds like it was a salt/reef setup. Mine came with a mag 24 too but its a bit of a power hog so I went with a smaller pump.

Yes those are he dimensions of my 220. I believe it is a 150 gallon. May be a 125? The dimensions are 60.5" Long, 18.5" Wide, 26" Tall. Today I just re sealed the lower portion of the tank. I may use it... not sure. Its just so dam huge. I just finished my custom stand this past weekend. I posted a couple if pictures, hopefully they work. The 150 or 125 whatever it is will fit in the stand. I made sure of it. I have herd the mag drive 24 is a power house and a bit on the loud side. So I'll try it out and see if I like it

The only negative to a sump that tall is your stand will have to be pretty high to access the sump for maintenance. Assuming is going underneath. Looks like you've accounted for it.....

If stand height is not an issue then go for it. My 300,135 and 120 all have 75's (21" tall) underneath and the stands needed to be at least 34" tall just to pull the socks. Yours is 5" taller than that. At 6' tall I have to use a stepladder to get to the bottom of my tanks.

Just something to consider.
