220 Gallon Stocking Advice (Geos, Uaru, Severum etc...)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What about adding a pair of dwarf pike cichlids? Though I dont have any experience with them I know some are gorgeous and arent as aggressive as the larger species. The "surinamensis" are most likely abalios or altifrons but post pics and we can ID them for you. From everything I've read is caring for species of geos is all about the same. I'll be checking back for updates cuz I just got a bgk and I'm planning on having it in my future 180g with geos and uaru!

It's funny, I posted a stock list in the general aquaria section not long ago with a pair of Dwarf Pike (Crenicichla Notophthalmus) included and never got a single response. Funny thing is below my thread was 5 pages of replies on stocking a 30 gallon. :screwy: Whatever....

I really wanted them but the LFS has had only three pair in this year and told me not to get them if I have an overflow they could fit through, and I do. :( I wish I would have bought them though, cool fish and only $39.95 for the pair at 3". I will post pics and updates on the stock once I get the tank done in the media lounge. Should be less than a week.

I've got two male heckeliis and they seem less aggressive than my altifrons of similar size. I'd get a group of smaller ones and pickout the females and keep a few males, or if they aren't getting along just a single male.
And to answer your question, they look better in real life than they do in pics.
;)

BTW is the 220g 30"wide or tall? That will affect the number of fish you can keep.

Yeah after my rant about no one having any, the LFS had four at 3"-4" when I went down there, AFTER I posted yesterday... I agree they look better in person. ;)

The tanks is 72" long, 24" front to back, 30" tall. (won't do that again by the way, not for SA fish) My stock list has changed like nine times since I first posted but I am getting closer at least! I got nothing but time on my hands until nitrite drops to 0ppm. I am at 2ppm right now in a fishless cycle.

If you're starting out with juvi's you could get too many fish [ie more than you'll keep as adults] and think them out as they grow depending on who's getting along and which you prefer.

Its a shame the tank is tall not wide, I've got one that is 30"wide and its perfect, planning on getting another to set up as a specific SA tank with a group of altifrons, angels, and a few other things.

G. surinamensis is supposed to have spot patterns on the caudal fin. Several Geo. species look quite similar so it'd be helpful if you could take actual pictures of the fish. Try to get details of the lateral spot, and caudal fin, etc when you do....

I got your pics for an ID. They are not at the LFS anymore though, they are in my tank. Here is the best I can do as far as pics. I think it's an Altifrons but you are the expert, not me. I'm still trying to learn. These two were in a 40 gallon tank with silver dollars and a pissed off common pleco beating them up, what was I gunna do????

ID 01.JPG
ID 02.JPG
ID 03.JPG

The small Acarichthys Heckelii pair.
Threadfin 01.JPG

The gang including the Uaru. I will only be keeping the single Uaru though, no others. To hard to get food to the plecos with this guy...

Once I get a confirmed ID I will have to change my orriganal plans allot but I decided not to sell my 135 so I still have some options. Thanks guys!

:grinno:

hey I'm just learning the basics too and it's fun! :)

Neither of the two is G. altifrons though. The fish in the second picture is a Satanoperca, most likely a leucosticta. It does seem to have a lot more blue than usual and thicker lips, but it's not a "red lip".

The Geophagus in the first and third pictures looks like an abalios, but I'm not positive.

I think the experts might not say altifrons, given the size of the midlateral spot ... but that's just a guess.

However, I think that second one you rescued is a Satanoperca mapiritensis ... which would be a really nice find as they aren't that common.

Yeah I knew about the Satanoperca, (took your advice) it would not get out of the way in the pic but I can't quite seem to find the right pic to ID the geo in the first and third like you said. I'll start looking at Abalios and see if that's it. These pics were from day one in the tank and are stressed coloration.

The Jurupari has about twice as much blue as you see in the pics. Also his head seems broader than the Leucosticta I has seen in pics. Are there more species of Jurupari? It's about 8" in size if that helps.
