The major difference between S. leucosticta and S. jurupari is that S. jurupari doesn't have speckles on their cheeks, but yours does....

Here are mine:

S. leucosticta:

I think that second one you rescued is a Satanoperca mapiritensis ... which would be a really nice find as they aren't that common.

So I am sure I thought the same thing as every reletivly new SA cichlid owner when I thought there was only one species of Jurupari. How sure are you on Satanoperca Mapiritensis? Any specific pics I can get that will make it easier to ID for you?

I agree that the Geo is a G. abalios. Not sure on the Satanoperca though

You guys freakin rock. :headbang2:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2Thank you so much, this is fun.

I just looked up a TON of pics for the Abalios and I agree 100%. I look at this fish all the time so I know when I see it. Not a bad find at 8"-9" for $6. (had a $13 in store credit) I got both fish for $19 each.

There are 4 descriped jurupari group species, and a couple of undescribed.

Your pics are pretty good. It has the facial patterning that rules our jurupari. The size rules out pappaterra. It lacks the spotting under the dorsal fin that leucosticta has (1-3 rows depending on where they are from, you can clearly see them in peathenster's pics).

So given the facial spots, the lack of spots under the dorsal, and that bronze/copper coloration is why I'm leaning towards Satanoperca mapiritensis. I'm not 100% just becuase there are not a lot of pics of mapiritensis, but the few I've seen deffinately lack that dorsal spotting.

Hey DP I think you got it right - http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5529

- blue fins
- thicker lips
- lack of spotting under the dorsal fin

I'm much better with Satanoperca than I am with Geophagus ... of course, there are only 7 species, which makes it much easier!! :grinno:

I think you are both right too because I was just looking at that same picture online going, "yep, that's it". Check out a couple better pics, I tried to get one at most angles. Just so we all sleep at night. It's funny how a couple silver dollars and an ugly pleco in a little tank can make these NEVER leave each others side. I would like to find who ever brought them into the LFS and see what else they have..... :naughty:

Great info guys! Satanoperca mapiritensis is new to me and is gorgeous! Great pics btw!

THANKS! I had a lot of fun trying to find this species and you guys have been great. I know the owner of that LFS and I get the first pick when ever they receive any medium to large geos or rare plecos. The landlord agreed today that if it's in the garage, I can go as large as 300 gallons and keep the 225/135! But "only" 3 tanks. Stay tuned........... I still want a Tapajos tank.
