Hey guys. So I'm finally hoping to finalize filtration for my 220g tank that will be for my gars and bichirs (:headbang2). I had initially planned on using a sump, since it has built in overflows and bulkheads. I even have a 50g glass sump mostly built, with a pump, heaters, and filtration media ready to go.

However, I've been thinking more and more that I might rather plumb a couple of canister filters to the tank instead. I am getting my tax return back in the next couple of weeks, so I should the fundage to pick up a pair of pretty much whatever canister I want.

I would have to upload some pics of the tank for this next part to make sense, and I'll try to do that once I get home from work. The tank has dual overflows, with a single return. My idea is this:

1. Drill new holes in the tank for the drain and return lines for the canister filters.

2. Use the current single return bulkhead as the drain for a separate closed circuit pump.

3. Use the bulkheads in the bottom of the overflows as returns.

4. Fill the overflows with a buoyant biomedia such as K1, or bioballs, etc. The water would flow UP through the overflow towers, through the media, then out through the teeth into the tank.

What do you guys think of this idea? I would use a fairly low power pump for the closed circuit (probably 250-500 gph) to increase contact time with the biomedia.

Would I even need 2 canisters then, or do you think all the bio in the overflows would be enough to only need 1 canister for water polishing and additional bio?

I will also take suggestions on what kind of canister filter to buy. I am currently thinking FX5's, because they are just so /V\onster, but would like some other opinions as well.

I'm a filtration freak so no such thing as over filtration to me but if you wanted to run the sump and a Eheim 2262 I would believe that would be plenty If you want to have a whirlpool you can run 2x 2262's and the sump :) just my op
Good luck let us know what you do

Fx5 are good but if you want the benz of the canister world go with Eheim 2262 the price is pretty high but that's only my preference you can probably find 2x fx5 full media for the price of 1 2262 full media

Shoot, looking at the specs on the 2262, I could probably get away with just running a single 2262 and nothing else...

The price on that is a little high for a single filter for me. I would probably be more inclined to go with an FX5, just because the cost is about half...

Also, which biomedia do you guys prefer in your larger canisters? I just tried out Seachem's Matrix with a current canister filter, and it seems to do a good job.

What's the best biomedia for the money to fill up an FX5 or other large canister?

I'm running to FX5s hard plumbed on my 300G. It works well. Although it makes things difficult if you are running a drip system.

Honestly, sumps vs canisters are personal preference. I've used both, and I like both. My canisters are much quieter.

I have two on my 220 gal :D
But then, this leaves room for my shoal of 8-11'' pirayas to grow (and eat, and poop) a bit more ...

Well, I've run several sumps, and I'm currently running one on my 125g tank that is housing all the fish I need to upgrade to the 220g. Since I already have everything for the sump, I would normally just set that up, but the plumbing, including bulkheads, will have to be completely brand new, and I think it would be easier to just use canisters for now.

Don't you just drill an extra overflow hole for the drip system and then run a drip line in?

Thanks. I'd love to do something like that, but I can't quite afford to shell out $1,000 for 2 canisters and all the media to go with...

$500 for 2 FX5's and media, on the other hand, is much easier for me.

Yes, a simple hole will do it. I guess I just figured that you wouldn't want to drill any more holes.
