hello all , picked up a used 220g tank from a fellow MFK'er the stand that came with it was too large and not tall enough for my applicatoin . so i am in the process of building a stand . the area that the tank is going is the, what used to be a garage , we finished half of the garage and it is now my den/ fish room / family room ..... this will be built into a wall , kinda , just gonna cut a window into the family room

my problem is , not only is the floor not level , wich i was prepared for , it is not flat either ( see pics ) i allowed for leveling in the stand design. i am not sure how to deal with the floor not being flat i dont want to allow the tank to sag and stress it any more than the 1800 lbs of water . my plan is to put rigid styrofoam panel between the tank and stand ( at the recommendation of my buddy who owns the lfs ) this will help with any minor defects in the stand but i am not sure what to do about the gaps under the stand .

Any ideas / input will be greatly appreciated

Scott

As long as the wood is all cut to length, the tank will compress it once filled and you won't have to worry about it. I would put some X frame in there to avoid sway.

When I built my mini stand I used 4x4 on the corners and base with 2x4 framing.

if it compresses it the tank may break under the weight .... i guess shims would work .. i guess i was hoping for an option other than shims , but i agree that would work . thanks guys

Pour a level concrete slab where the stand is going to sit?

220gal = 2200 lbs of water weight. That wood is going to compress to a degree no matter what you do. If it is not level it WILL sway.

Also no wood is cut perfect not is it 100% straight. It twists depending on the moisture content, and where the crown is. The tank weight will even that out.

Putting a tank on a firm base on uneven pavement will result in a skewed waterline (maybe barely visible).

You could just use a self-leveling compound available at most hardware stores. it doesn't need to be very thick, and would eliminate pouring a concrete slab. that would probably be your safest and easiest bet IMO.

1800 lbs of water will straighten that puppy right out so no worries there......AND ...the styrofoam is an excelent idea.....thats what ive had to do with my 130g and everything is just fine :0.....good luck and cant wait to see the finished prod
