how long do you think i can keep my cichla mono in a 220gal. tank? there will be an upgrade to 300 or more in a couple years. my mono is about 8 months old and 8" long.

I would say it will be fine. If it is a 24 inch wide tank some people would even argue you could keep him in there for life. I am sure he will be comfortable in that tank for a year or two easy.
I know there are others that have maintained there's in a 180 til they were 18"+. Depending on the dimensions of your tank, I don't see why you would have a problem keeping it in your 220 for a couple of years. But like johno27 said, it really depends on the width of the tank.
