225 Gallon Aquarium Leaked

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hello; This is not my understanding. I have tanks with lots of years and no leaks. To me it is more the way a tank is handled.
Probably true. I bought my 77g hagen brand new 20 years ago. After that I only moved it once (when I moved out). Always used the tank and it hasn't leaked yet, but the silicon is starting to loosen on the edges a bit but could just be from gravel wear and tear. Im sure they will all need resealed... eventually. Proper handling and a good seal likely go a long way though. I always take really good care of everything I own.

You can do it in 1-2 days. Just razor all of the existing silicone off. 100% of it ( the only tough part) alcohol can help get it totally clean.

Use painters tape to tape around the seams, silicone bead seams, use tool or finger to shape , remove tape. Let cure.

I use GE silicone 1. But rtv is stronger. Good luck

^^and there you have it.

Thanks all! I have decided to reseal it. I have it empty now and dry. I am about to go get razors, alcohol etc. I think I am going to buy a new longer level since it appears my slab floor is not level. I need a second opinion from a different level lol.... The short plastic one could be uneven?

my opinion for what is worth, once a tank is leaking,. the whole thing needs to come apart, this is diff than a reseal, its a rebuild.

So I used a ladder and cut out the silicone. Later I will clean with steel wool and alcohol until it is perfectly clean. Also ordered momentive rtv. I guess you cant find it easily locally. Thanks for the input!

Be sure to rinse out all remains of the alcahol.....and,just checking but did you remove all of the inner silicone?

the purpose of alcohol or acetone is it cleans and does not require rinsing. if you take to rinsing then will need to back over again with either to remove any residue.

they both evaporate leaving nothing behind.
