225 Gallon Plywood Tank Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Got some of my Liquid Rubber today. I only ordered one gallon at first because I didn't have the spare money to order both at the time of purchase, but I will be ordering the second gallon once I get paid in the next couple days. It came from Rubberizeit.com and it's the Universal Grade(UG).

it wasn't too expensive compared to other products. I believe I paid a little over $80 for 1gallon. I've seen similar products go for $90-$120 for a single gallon and that's not including shipping. If you can't get your hands on Zavlar, then I suggest looking for Rubberizeit Universal Grade(UG). And a little goes a decent way with this. I'm thinking I might not even need all of both gallons for this build, but you can't be too safe so I will probably use all of the second gallon regardless.

I picked up two new Polypterus' today that will eventually go into this tank.
-Ornate Bichir (Polypterus Ornatipinnis)
-Albino Nigerian Senegalus (Polypterus Senegalus var. Albino)

With the addition of these two, the new expected stock list will be:
-Endlicheri Bichir (Polypterus Endlicheri Endlicheri)
-Nigerian Senegalus (Polypterus Senegalus)
-Ornate Bichir (Polypterus Ornatipinnis)
-Albino Nigerian Senegalus (Polypterus Senegalus var. Albino)
-Peacock Bass (Cichla Ocellaris)
-Pimelodella Four Line Catfish (Pimelodella Blochii)
-Royal Plecostomus (Panaque Nigrolineatus)
-Marbled Sailfin Plecostomus (Glyptoperichthys Joselimaianus)

As for progress on the tank, there hasn't been much. I've been really busy at work lately and I just haven't had the time to work on it. I do have all the plywood cut and ready to assemble, but I won't be able to get any more updates until my next off day, which hopefully will be soon! I want this done just as much, if not more, as everyone else!

Plywood tanks scare me. And types will eventually give out. 10 years tops usually

Sent from my iPad using MonsterAquariaNetwork app

I have seen plywood tanks that are 10+ years and are still just as strong. One of the LFS I go to has a huge 800+gal plywood tank and it has been running for over 14 years (according to the owner).

BUT they do scare me as well. I personally have never built one so this is going to be a huge test for me. If this is a success though, I will be building much bigger and better tanks.
Once I find a good acrylic supplier I will try to build more acrylic tanks, but I haven't found any reasonable priced acrylic suppliers yet.

hi
as long as you take your time and use a frame to support your plywood ( you didnt mention supporting the tank) the tank will be stronger than any glass tank supported by silicone.
i built one almost the same size as yours last year and its strong enough for me to climb on top of it when cleaning the tank.
i also had never built anything remotely like this before, but i was able to learn everything i needed from the build threads here.
have a look at my thread and fire away with any questions or worries you might have, i got great help from the guys here and would like to return the favour,
cheers Paul

I have been thinking about adding exterior bracing/framing to the tank, but not many people do it with tanks this size. I see it more on tanks ranging from 500g - 1,000g+. It wouldn't do anything but help though so I probably will add some framing if I feel it's necessary. I can always add at a later time as well if I need to. We'll see how it holds up for the first few months after finishing then I'll decide if I'll frame it or not. I do want to add some reinforcement cloth to the corners and seams though just to give it a bit more strength.

yeah, the framing is overkill but as my tank is in my livingroom i needed to be sure.
i also clothed the whole tank as ive seen too many ply tanks leak because the water pressure caused tiny cracks in the waterproof coat.
Just a bit of friendly advice man, i hope your build goes smooth and i look foward to the progress pics,
cheers
