I recently bought my 225. I am filling it on Monday. I'm going to cycle for about a month and add fish. But what fish? All I have right now for the tank is :
1- 7-8" Female Festae
1-7-8" Midas
2- 6-7" Bala Sharks ( gonna use as
Dithers and going to get a few more).

Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks.

Stay away from midas cichlids. When I got my 225 set up I originally went with a cichlid theme, I had a little midas that I grew out and needless to say every inch they put on they become more and more aggressive. they stop the other fish from growing by eating all the food and dominating them. Yeah there is a chance that you could get them to work. but Frontosa are much too mild mannered and make very good mixers.

Don't be fooled into thinking that cause you have a big tank you can throw aggressive loner cichlids with tankmates, I tried it and got bored of constantly having to rearrange decor or remove injured fish. I also hated that I could never add anything new to the tank without it being mercilessly beaten up. So i ditched cichlids and went for a peaceful community of larger fish. and never looked back. I have...

1 giant gourami
1 pleco
3 tinfoil barbs
1 asian upside down catfish
2 ornate bichirs
1 senegal bichir
1 clown knife
1 flag tail
1 florida gar
1 chocolate cichlid

all the fish are under 1' except for the florida gar that is around 17"ish. everyone gets on great, I have no fights. everyone gets enough food and the tank makes for an interesting active display. It feels great to not have to worry about my fish.

Can't wait 'til you completely cycle your tank! Don't forget to provide updates and pictures!

I don't have experience with Festaes, none here. I once had a midevil. They say that aggression is a case to case basis thing. Guess I lucked out having chosen one from the deepest pit of hell. A very beautiful 8" specimen, highly demonic indeed. I suggest you avoid them like plague in a community. It's really a hit or miss thing. Like me, I suggest tinfoil barbs for dithers coz MFK says they are fast and indestructible.

seriously avoid festae, they only look good when they are in breeding dress, take a really long time to grow and they like to be pretty much kept to a species tank in the long run.

like I said, don't just shove aggressive cichlids in there thinking the extra space will make it work... cause I been there and done that I'm just trying to share my exp.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to truths Midas for now. I got him from the people that sold me the tank and they had him with tiger barbs angelfish parrot fish Africans the Bala sharks and other smaller fish and they said they never had any aggression problems out if him

Midas will work fine and the female festae is one' of the best looking sa/ca cichlids there is, and that not while in breeding dress. The previous posters have no clue. Get the tank cycled add your existing fish, then later add more stock. Other large cichlids may or msy not work, will have some trial and error. Good luck.
