Howdy,

I am always amazed to see people willing to spend money on new tanks and new fish but not on best filtration possible  After all, a filter is the aquarium's heart, lungs, and liver. Does it make sense to go cheap on this life-support system? Not that cheapest is bad, I am just curious about the emphasis. Especially without mentioning the stocking level, which is crucial information...

A couple Hydro V sponge filters and an airpump will be cheapest ...

Sorry for the confusion, but i meant if any body had any DIY ideas and stuff like that.

For the stocklist it will be one jag (4 inch), one oscar (10 inch), one Pacu (12 inch), and in the future one occelaris.

big tank for em eh? try check lowes and see if they got some pond pumps. they have em here on the mainland for around $70 for a 700gph pump. If not, try www.kensfish.com. they got some cheap pumps to...

an 80 gallon sump could handle a 400 gallon tank.

A 55 gallon sump, if constructed right can hold over 100 LITERS OF BIO MEDIA!!

An 80 gallon sump can handle more than 240 LITERS OF BIO MEDIA!!!

People are filtering their 240 gallon tanks with 2-3 canisters that IF they happen to use 2080 filters, that would be only 36 Liters of media!

Even if you have 4000 GPH, you have a minimum of 23 seconds of contact time with 100 liters of bio media.

hahahahahahhahaha. whatever you say pal. i think your calculations are a bit off.

either way, you want a sump that is at least 1/4 the size of your display for good filtration. especially if thats your only source of filtration. i would personally go with a bigger filtration system, but thats just me. i prefer too mmuch filtration to not enough as is suggested all too often

Im making the tank 240 because of the adult size of the fish, and i also wanted to add a couple more pbass, and probably an arowana.

Really? You can build the sumps in different ways. I calculated 42x14x25, that equals over 240 liters. Try it. I used the dimensions of a 80 gallon high tank. 48 7/8 x 14 x 30.

I would be more polite but considering you used the "pal" term, thats out the window.

This particular design will have mechanical filtration above the bio media with a large drip plate.

Most designs I see don't utilize the space very efficiently and im sure this is why you think im full of crap.

A 80 gallon sump with a bio area that is 20"L x 13.5"W x 25"H = 110 liters. This is with mechanical filtration on the side of the bio filtration with glass seporators directing water.

Do the calculations, you will come up with the same result.

A sump a 1/4 the size? Gez is this another rule that we should all abide by?

How about my calculations for the 3 2080 filters? You think that is off? 12 liters each equals 36 liters. 2080s equal 900 GPH which equals to a total of 38 seconds of contact time. Please count to 38 seconds, do you think that it not a long time to perform nitrification?

I won't take advise from you. hell, you would probubly tell someone to use a 180 gallon sump on a 240 right? or even on a 300 gal?

This is just telling everyone that sumps do a horrible job at biological filtration when compared to a canister filter using MUCH MUCH less bio media.
