240 gallon stand..my stand paranoia or legit?

the thing is pretty much all stands from Aqueon/marineland are like this. almost none have full base bottoms..

and people have used these stands for ever with no problems..

I understand that a full base top is required for acrylic tanks though because acrylic sags.

I beg to differ. Glass does sag/bow. My Oceanic 220, the bottom piece of glass is 1/8"-1/4" lower in the center, compared to the sides, across the 72" length. The tank is supported by rim only, and the bottom of the stand is open without crossbeams.
 
your right. I guess I should be more clear. Glass tanks do not sag to the same degree that acrylic does, thats why most glass aquarium stands have only perimeter support and hold up fine for years and years. after all, we have all seen glass bow.

if you tried that with acrylic, (and someone with an acrylic tank correct me if I am wrong) you would end up with a big mess..
 
Haha yeah, the 260 lbs of rock, 400 lbs of sand, and 40 lbs of wood, plus water would likely have destroyed any cheaply made acrylic tank of the same size. If it wasn't an Oceanic brand tank, I even would be a bit more conservative.

Soon I will be building a support for the bottom glass pane to relieve the weight.
 
So do you think I should add a cross beam across the top middle of stand? or is the possibility of a slight bow not a big deal?
 
Your tank sits on a rim, just like mine does. A cross brace will do nothing to help a sagging bottom- which it is doing only because of the excessive weight i've put inside the tank.

When I support the tank bottom, i will be building a separate stand inside my stand, to press upwards on the bottom pane.

It's an unrelated issue to your stands structure concerns.
