Do you trim the foam insalation to sit inside the frame of the tank or does the frame sit on top of the foam?

The tank frame sits right on top of the styrafoam.

what is the point of the styrofoam again?

It helps take out any inperfections, high and low spots, in the stand.

technically the weight of the tank should be evenly distributed over the stand. wouldn't it make sense that the addition of the styrofoam would just increase the angle of the imperfection?

personally, i've had pretty good luck cutting a piece of 3/4" plywood the same shape as the stand and placing it underneath the tank as a means of creating a more stable surface for the tank.

any one know if i'm wrong? i'm breaking down all of my tanks right now and would like to be able to properly advise the people who are buying them

I dont know try to start a fresh thread?

No, the styrafoam will crush and smash under the weight at a high point, unlike plywood or any other kind of wood. I got this tank from glasscages.com and they even suggest AT LEAST 3/4" styrafoam underneath the tank.

For a rough example, if you lay on a bed your whole body touches because the bed conforms to your body, But if you laid on a wood floor, there are parts of your body that arent touching. With a tank you dont want that, you want the whole tank to be fully supported, or something might give, namely glass.
