A sump is (usually) a small tank that goes under your big one. It acts as a filter, as well as often holding equipment like heaters. In order to get a sump, you need to have the tank drilled, where they put a hole in the side. You fit a bulkhead and overflow box to the hole. Water drains from the tank into the sump, then is returned by a pump. The trick is you need a big enough sump to hold the draining water from the main tank when the pumps are off. I'd say a 75 gal minimum.

I have a sump without having my tank or the sump drilled....

That's why I said "usually". You can get one of those overflow box contraptions. We don't sell them due to risk of flood if they malfunction, plus insurance companies often won't insure damage from floods they cause. Having the tank drilled is a safer option.

this is a bit off topic, but I wonder how difficult it would be to install a float into your tank that will shut off your pump if the water level gets too high.

Not too difficult, you just need the right parts. In my opinion, it's still a lot of potential things to fail, compared to 25 bucks to drill the tank (I know that's no help is it's already established).

Well, you could try :D Sometimes you get weird combos that work.
