Catfish- Ornate pim or Pictus Cat, or what about a huge shoal of cory's? They can llok pretty good in high numbers...

Possible tankmates: Geo Community?
Severum Pack with some dithers (silver dollars?) i think this would look awesome :D with lots of bogwood and vegetation cover.

could do a small semi peace full tank with fish like
Aequidens' pulcher, blue acara
Thorichthys meeki, fire mouth
Mesonauta festivus, Festivum

or a bit more aggressive like
'Cichlasoma' salvini , salvini
Cichlasoma' octofasciatum, jack dempsey
Hypsophrys nicaraguensis , Nicaragua Cichlid (not sure never kept it)
Archocentrus nigrofasciatus, convict

a genus i've been liking more is Herichthys i would stay away from a texas if you want smaller fish but the rest should stay with in 8" mark and have some great color.
Herichthys sp. "Blue Labridens,
Herichthys sp. "Rio Cazones,
Herichthys sp. "Tamul Labridens",
Herichthys labridens ,
Herichthys bartoni

Looking at:

G. altifrons
G. "tapajos" redhead
G. surinamensis
H. bartoni

Give me some ideas for combos of the Geophagus and tankmates for the bartoni. Also tankmates for the Geos (catfish/smaller fish/cyprinids/etc).

I don't get the self restriction to 6 inches. you got a 240, you might as well put a tank divider in it if you're going with fish that small.

If you absolutely have to self restrain like that, I'd do a massive amount of malawi african cichlids. You could make that tank look like a reef.

For Central americans, you could attempt yellow dwarf pikes, some firemouths,
texas cichlids, maybe some grammodes, and some balzani /heckeli.

agreed.

you're really kind of limiting yourself with that size restriction for new world cichlids so i would also go with the africans, even though i strongly prefer ca/sa cichlids to them

Edit: although a lot of geos would be cool... with maybe some severums too to have fish that are more mid-level fish, and also maybe a massive school of some larger tetras like black skirts

Most geos get to well over 7"... (G. altifrons can get up to 12")
