Hi, I'm thinking of getting a used 25 gallon tank and putting a couple baby red bellied piranhas in there. I would guess they are close to 2" long. Do you think a tank that size would be good? Also, does $50 for a 25 gallon tank with accessories sound like a good deal?

A few years ago I had a larger 40 gallon or so tank with 2 - 3" RBPs that worked out great. This time around I want to keep the tank smaller since I have to buy everything all over again.

Also if anyone has some specific advice towards keeping piranhas or any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks

25 is pretty much too small. If you got them nickel size, they'd be pushing 4-5 inches each in just 2-4 months. You're better off saving that 50 bucks and grabbin something larger. I don't know what it like in your area but in my area there's constantly people trying to quickly unload 55 and up for 75-150 bucks fully loaded with stands. I'd just keep a watch on craigslist.

You must not have had your other tank very long? They should've grown pretty quickly

I agree that tank won't last too long...I had 6 rbp's from around quarter-dollar size in a 30 gal and in 2 months they out grew it. (I knew that was going to happen so I was prepared with another tank)
For the 2 of them (which I wouldn't suggest keeping that small of a group) I would recommend something in the range of 50-60 gal and that could house them for a few years (once they hit 6ish" they grow about 1" per year on average) but that jump from baby to 6" goes realllly fast.

why not get a shoal of exodons? they are basically miniature piranhas and would be great for your 25gal.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm really glad I found this forum! unfortunately space is a concern for me and I can't really have a large setup right now even though I would really like some piranhas. I haven't heard of exodons before but they sound like they could be what I'm looking for. I will have to search around MFK for some more info.

and to ballinouttacontrl, I can't remember exactly how long I had my RBPs before but I would guess about a year. It's been to long!
