25 gallon tank setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey Bitter,

I asked a LFS today about exodons and she immediately knew the fish. She said to give the fish some room to swim, I should have a 75 gallon tank at least! I was thrown off a little bit. Suspicious that she was trying to sell me a tank I said thanks and goodbye. Now I've read some of your posts on MFK that you can have a shoal of exodons in as little as a 10 gallon tank with proper filtration.

So my question is, what do you think the optimum tank size is for a shoal of 12?

Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I'd like my fish to be as happy as possible.

Thanks MFKers! Haha. ;)

First, let me be very clear. 'can' and 'should be' are two entirely different things.
To be sure that nobody reading your post gets the wrong impression, exodons should not be kept in a 10g tank

I do not suggest keeping exodons in a group of less than 10 for aggression reasons. With that in mind, you are looking at an average of 3"/each. with the 1"/g theory, you're looking at a 30g minimum for exodons. So for 12, it would be around the same. A 40B has a nice footprint and would provide more than enough room for a dozen exodons.

With more understanding of things like water chemistry, filtration, water parameters, nitrogen cycle, shoaling characteristics, GH hormones/ stunting, and all that other good stuff, you will learn how to responsibly bend the inch/gal "rule", but this is not a method commonly advocated.

In the end. More space = Better.
So when you ask me what the "optimal" tank for a dozen exos would be, its hard to say. 40 will be more than enough, 75 would be even better, hell, 1500gal would be sweet too. So whatever you are able to get and properly set up and maintain, would be the "optimal" tank.

Thanks for the informative reply!

I think my 25 gallon tank deal fell through, so I may be in the market for something larger :) The more time I spend on MFK looking at people's setups the smaller a 25 gallon tank gets :nilly:

One more question, do these exodons need extra filtration? what size filter would I need for a 25 gal tank with 12 exos? say I end up with a 12 exos in a 50 gallon tank, what size filter should I have? Also, I'm only really familiar with the hang on back type, should I consider another type? I know, I know, I have a ways to go :headshake

thanks again

EDIT: I'm guessing it's a exodon in your avatar? what is the story on that barb under the eye??

Exodons aren't particularly messy fish, but considering you will need to keep up regular feedings to keep the aggression down, extra filtration is good to have. I overfilter all my tanks personally. Just get yourself an AC110 and you'll be good to go.
My avatar is a choke up shot of the head and teeth of an exodon. Its just hard to see in the small pic.

Btw. You may want to change your avatar picture. Besides Ed (the author) the only people I know that have written consent to use the pictures from that set are myself and Brian. Wouldn't want you to get in trouble for the copywrite. ;)
