hey guys, so i bought a 265 gallon tank but it seems like it has a leak from one area of the tank, how should i go about resealing it? should i take off all the silicone on that side/ area or should i just reseal over it? whats the best silicone to use? from looking around it seems GE silicone is the best i think. thanks everyone. MFK is great.

If you know where the leak is you could go over it with GE Silicone II. Just make sure the area is good and clean and dry. Let it cure for a day or so and you should be good to go. Hope this helps.

Your best bet is to totally remove the bad silicone and reseal it. What's you tank made of? If its glass GE Silicone 1 Windows/Doors (no mildew inhibitors) should be fine as I used it many times already or you can get aquarium silicone but I think its more expensive. If its Acrylic, sorry I have no experience with that one. Good luck.

its definatly glass, im not positive of the leak area but i know where the side is, should i scrap all the silicone on that area off and then re apply

Yes, better scrape off the whole length of that area.

If you dont know where the leak is take all the old silicone off. Start over with GE Silicone I. I accidently hit the key and said II in my other post. DONT use the II.

Hello; It is my understanding that GE silicone I is the proper one for tanks and that we shoud not use silicone II as it does have additives such as mold inhibtors???
Yes, I have found it best to strip all the old stuff and reseal the entire tank. I have tried the patch a small area proceedure enough times with such sketchy results, so that I now do an entire tank as a routine. Do a search on tank sealing, there are a lot of posts about it.

GE Silicone II does have mold inhibtors. It is actually an acid if I remember correctly. I just looked a my caulking gun and it has GE Silicone I in it. :)

ok great guys thanks so much, its frustrating right now, so just scrap off the silicone on one area correct? not the whole tank? i know just about which side and area but i wanna be safe cause all that water everywhere will be a pain.

Check the old silicone around the tank. Its your call if you want to do the whole thing. More elbow grease if u ask me but you can sleep with a smile on your face. Just don't forget how much water (265 gallons) it holds. :)
