I just took a styro box, cut a hole in it, and shoved my flash in it (sb-600). It softens the light a lot and makes even exposure easier. Yea, the external flash is really beneficial since you can put it on top of the aquarium. It will give you the maximum amount of usable light. Also, you're right it's a standard SD card.
