269g plywood tank?

Well, the water only travels over 1 baffle. It travels under 2 baffles, and around 4 baffles. There is 8" in between each of the lengthwise baffles.

I suppose I could get rid of one of the lengthwise baffles, and have about 10" in between them instead of 8", but the whole point is that the water has a long contact time with the biomedia.

I would give yourself a bit more room for mechanical filtration. Add in a drip plate or some micron filter socks.

I was planning on having a filter sock on each pipe outlet, and then it would overflow onto a filter pad/drip plate assembly. And that filter pad is going to be 8"x12", which is a decent size, coming after filter socks.

I'll either to the filter pad on top of a drip plate, or I will do 2 or 3 consecutive filter pads placed vertically, similar to how they are in a HOB filter. That way I could use consecutively smaller pore filter pads, and just remove one at a time to clean.

Perfect!

Which one? Filter sock to drip plate, or filter sock to filter pad baffles? Sorry, its late and I'm sick :(.

Really, I would just go with the filter socks. They will filter way more than what most filter pad will get. Maybe put a couple pieces of filter media in there to catch anything that slips by when you change out the socks.

Well, I've been doing a lot of drawing, measuring, calculating, and pricing, and here is a partial pricing for the tank and stand. This does not include the glass window pane, rubber lining, lights, plumbing, or pumps.

Plywood, 2x6x8's, and screws should run about $353.16.

Glass should be between $150-200.

Rubber Liner should be $150-200.

Lights will be $100-200.

Pump will be $150.

Plumbing will be about $50-60.

So a tentative total would be: $953.16-1163.16

Much more than I was thinking about spending, but obviously the larger you go, the more expensive it gets. I'm gonna have to do some checking around to see if my prices are right, and possibly decrease the dimensions of the tank a little bit to skim some costs. I'm not planning on spending $1,000 on a tank right now (although this would still be about 1/4-1/5 the cost of an equivalent acrylic or glass aquarium).

I'm going to rethink things a little bit. I KNOW i'm overbuilding the stand, I'm going to look at doing it with either all or mostly 2x4's instead of 2x6's. I'm rethinking the size and what goes in the sump. And I'm going to price out some different sized acrylic sheets as well. Just to see what all my options are before I decide to commit to anything...

Priced some 1/2" acrylic sheets today. At $250/sheet, the tank alone would cost me $750, plus cutting (myself or the store), vs. $400-500 in materials for a plywood tank. So it'll be 1/3 to almost 1/2 as much to go with plywood and a glass panel, I think.
