I am going to build a shed to put all of my fish tanks in and I am going to build a plywood 270 gallon tank. My original plan was to build it 72"x48"24" but I figured out I didn't have enough room while planning the shed so I am making it 72"x36"X24". I am going to have rays in the tank. I want to use an eheim canister filter, but I am unsure of what model. What wattage of heater do I need and what model should I use? If I use a titanium heater with a digital temperature controller, could I still put it inline?

You will want larger footprint for rays. That will work for a grow out tank. If you're set on using eheim canisters, go with 2262. You'll need maximum media capacity for rays. IMO you should be running two. No online heaters at that size. You will lose a lot of efficiency / energy. I would go with a Fluval e-series 300 watt.

Then I may expend the plans for the shed and make the tank 72"x48"24". I have heard good things about titanium heaters. The fluval e series look good too. I won't run the heater inline. I was also thinking about building canisters out of buckets and using eheim media. Would that work?

There are a metric ton of people who swear by those heaters. I have had nothing but problems. Of all of the heaters I have had a titanium is so far the worst. I'm sure someone will chime in with their love for them and I am happy for them if they have had a good experience but I would never trust one of my rays with a titanium heater again. Fluval has a heater guard that is rugged. My rays like to break equipment and I have yet to have one of these fail on me. If you can expand the footprint, you should. In general as well, but especially for rays. Buckets have issues leaking as they were not designed for pressure. The kind of pressure (turnover/GPH) needed for rays seems problematic. If you go the DIY route I would recommend a sump instead and you can use whatever media you want including Eheim.

I never said its a canister a 55 gallon drum of k1 kaldness media is its own filter. The DRUM is a sump itself....King of DIY has videos on his and runs his tanks on this or he did. Not barrels but a tub. Barrels would be easier to use.

Still not sure I understand why you pointed out to my why it was in a shed. Regardless I do agree, a barrel can be used for a filter. That said I personally find them harder to plumb into the system. If you want it under your tank you need a really tall stand unlike if you have a regular sump they usually fit no problem.

That and K1 is really expensive, it would be close to $400 to fill a 55 barrel from the prices I've seen. It is an option but I feel like it can be done cheaper and work just as well.

I am using a k1 barrel on my pond and I never got it to fluidize so I need to change the plumbing. I'd like to go the sump route, but I am limited on space. Would an ultima II 1000 work JK47 JK47 ?
