If I decided on a severum, then I would be using a 36X12X18 inch tank...I guess that'd be kind of cramped. Any other suggestions for a colorful fish?

Yeah, 36x15x15 would work but 12" wide is a bit cramped.

Female (Males get too big) Salvini would do nicely and they're easy to sex at quite a small size. I've really go no other suggestions for a single specimen tank, but I always prefer to keep fish with others.

Well, I'm no expert but I'd think that a tank like that would awesome for some sort of Rams, but I'm kinda partial to them... plus, they are pretty colorful! But they are kind of smallish, so if you were going more for the bigger fish then I guess rams wouldn't really fit the bill. Also, angel fish can be pretty colorful, and might work too.

a pair of rainbow cichlids would be nice with some cories for the bottom, and perhaps a small school of something. im not really up to par with small schooling fish, i like tiger barbs, but they can be fin nippers.

Pair of Cutteri,Nanoletus,Hrp or convicts would work well.

female festae would owrk for a few years but you couldnt keep anything with her.

they take years to get to anything to big for a 30G but i highly doubt tank mates would work.

you could do a salvini as suggested.

I think salvini might be the best choice. Pair of firemouths could work. I think a severum would be cramped in there but maybe...if you really want to push it a single GT or dempsey. I've bred JD's in a 29 so it's technically doable but they weren't huge, 6-7" or so. Once it got to that 10-11" range it would be really tight.

I'm liking the salvinis and the rainbows...how often do they show their reds and oranges? I'm seeing differences in pictures.
