I really like my tiger barbs, they are colorful and have a lot of personality, aren't too expensive and are VERY hardy. I keep them in my 20 gallon with a lot of live plants, along with some loaches and a red tail black shark... Problem is they are semi-aggressive... they are totally fine if you keep a large group, but you are pretty much limited to other tiger barbs (not really a big deal in a 29 gallon), or a few others... i'm just a fan of barbs and general, many are more peaceful than tiger barbs.
Be careful when buying some of the more "common" fish, i've had bad luck with platies when I was starting out... could be blamed on all the in-breeding, or my bad fish keeping. Just inspect for signs of poor health... white spot, inactivity, etc.
I would definitely recommend some botia loaches, they have great personality. Personally have kept yoyo loaches and polka dot loaches, both are awesome. I have found they are also hardy fish.
Don't be scared off by live plants... get a T5 fixture like a coralife... I have this one for my 20 gallon long, it would fit your tank, I'm pretty happy with it...

Stick with plants that don't need a lot of light or Co2, like anubias nana, java fern, hairgrass, java moss, crypts.
Also, I tell everybody to go to a fish store and just look around... see what catches your eye. Even if something is too big for a 29, there is usually an equivalent in a smaller size that is similar... example clown loaches outgrow 29 gallon, yoyo loaches are great substitutes.
